How cost-effective is it to make homemade pantry staples?

I just read an interesting article about homemade pantry items. The author tries out several recipes to see if she can make things like bagels and yogurt at home for cheaper than it costs at the grocery store. You can see the article here. Enjoy!

Make Your Own Groceries by Daphne Hartwig is a good resource if you can find it.

Interesting article! I've tried making my own bread and found it much more time efficient just to buy it! (Although it does taste amazing when it's hand-made, and there's also something magical about moulding bread with your own two hands.)

I make my own bread, bagels, pretzels, muffins, etc...as well as grow my own veggies and fruit...most times it is cheaper, sometimes it takes longer, but I know what my family is eating...this year we introduced chickens for eggs... going green is fun, and a great challenge that we enjoy...next step, re-using everything possible so we don't need to worry about garbage day, so far, we are down to one bag a week (7 of us in this household)... and I haven't bought freezer bags, juice jugs etc for a long time..saving a lot of money!!!

That is interesting thanks for sharing! I'm surprised she didn't try something more basic like bread.
